French Chic meets Southern Style

Welcome to Belle Nicho Winery at Howling Dog Farm. We are a small farmstead winery adding our own Southern style to our wines since 2012.  However, Janet and Bridget’s journey actually began in 2007, following a visit with Frank and Debra Bolden at South Creek Vineyards and Winery.  During the spring of 2008, Belle Nicho initiated their first Vineyard Work Day, with many faithful friends planting vines and laying mulch.

Belle Nicho produces wine using native, French-American hybrid and vinifera grapes as well as fruit.  Since 2008, they have planted Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cynthiana, Isabella and Seyval Blanc.  Belle Nicho has also partnered with other wineries to purchase grapes for use in wine production.

Our wine tastings have been called "fun" and "unpretentious", and in 2014 and 2015 our wines received gold, silver and bronze medals from the NC State Fair!

We welcome visitors to the Farm and Winery throughout the year to tour the vineyard or relax by the tasting room. The winery is open from Friday to Sunday from 12 noon to 5pm.

We will be  closed December 24, 2017 through mid February, 2018.  During that period we are open by appointment only for purchase of bottles of wine.

And there's more too...

It's not just the wines that get people talking at Belle Nicho. We are proud to offer  jelly and juice made from our Isabella grapes and a wonderful assortment of other locally made produce of the highest quality, including honey and sorghum made the old fashioned way!

And don't forget to pick up those beautiful glasses too, a great memento of the friends you will make at Belle Nicho Winery.

And there's more too...

Catawba Valley Wine Trail

Belle Nicho is a short driving distance to three other wineries that cooperate in several Sip! Stop! and Savor! Wine Hops during the year.

Why not plan your itinerary and discover not only some great wines, but also some of the most beautiful scenery, and friendliest people around!

Green Practices

We are strong supporters of alternative energy.  With a grant from the NC Tobacco Fund combined with personal income, the Winery purchased a 4.95kW solar PV system providing an estimated annual 7,068 kWh. The biggest incentive for the Winery was to be able to use NC GreenPower to send renewable energy back to the grid for all N.C. citizens to use.

The vineyard uses only organic practices and products for soil amendments and bug/disease management. However, because grapes and  juice are also purchased from other growers and  producers our wines are not currently considered organic. The Winery is conservative with their daily efforts as well. We increased insulation as a result of energy audits to improve the Winery’s energy efficiency.  To conserve on water usage, we irrigate the vineyard with reclaimed water from two 2500 gallon rain water cisterns.

Currently growing small quantities of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, our main focus is on French-American hybrids and native grapes such as Seyval Blanc, Isabella, and Cynthiana.  Belle Nicho Winery’s tasting room opened in October 2013 and offers eight different local wines to choose from.

Our Wines

We produce wines from native grapes, french hybrids, fruit and vinifera. Our wines range from dry through semi- sweet to a lovely sweet red.

We feel there is something to suit every taste at Belle Nicho Winery.

Chambourcin  is a French American hybrid grape variety that produces an aromatic red or blush wine.

Our  Chambourcin was harvested in 2012 and after fermentation was aged in oak for 18 months. It is a great dry red wine with a nice spicy nose and taste with balanced acidity.

This red wine pairs well with all manner of food.

Our Rose is made from 100% Cabernet Franc grapes.  Skins were left on the grapes briefly before fermentation to impart the lovely color.

The wine was slightly sweetened before bottling but has a nice acid finish to balance. This wine is great drunk by itself but really complements spicy food.

Our Strawberry-Rhubarb is a fruit wine made from equal parts strawberry and rhubarb.  The lovely aroma and taste of strawberry is balanced by the more acidic tang of the rhubarb.

This unique wine is a great addition to any cellar but should be drunk young.  Pairs well with pork, ham and poultry, but is delightful on its own.

Traminette is a crisp dry white wine with a wonderful floral aroma and spicy flavor. Great accompaniment to Asian, poultry and seafood dishes.
